A country rich in historical and architectural monuments

The capital, Bratislava , is a must-see if you wish to visit this Central European country. Architecture buffs will be enchanted by the Castle, one of the city's landmarks. It's a 10th-century fortress representing the image of the Slovak capital. Today, the castle is a national museum displaying furniture and jewelry from the past. At the same time, you can discover the famous steps near the building, offering a breathtaking view of the Danube and the Right Bank. Bratislava is also home to the Michael Gate or MichalskáBrána. Renovated at the end of the 14th century, this is the only remaining of the 4 gates leading into the city. A visit to Bratislava is also an opportunity to discover the unusual statues found throughout the city. The tourist favorite is Cumil, representing a figure emerging from the sewers, which continues to fascinate passers-by. There's also the statue of a soldier from Napoleon's army, who will keep you company on a bench in the city's main square.

Before leaving Bratislava, you can sample the local cuisine on offer in the capital's many restaurants. Albrecht is a fine-dining establishment specializing in European dishes, but with a focus on Central European cuisine. Staroslovenská krčma, for its part, invites you to savor a typically Slovak menu: Bryndzové halušky, Kapustnica or Fazuľová. You can also sample local wines at establishments such as the Grand Cru WineGallery.

Located around 450 km from Bratislava, Presovsky is a charming town to include on your Slovakia sightseeing tour. It has its own mountain resort in the StrebskéPleso region. This site is located on the border between Slovakia and Poland. Here, you can enjoy a wide range of activities, including trail walking, trekking and even cycling. You can also stay in this region of Slovakia, where luxury hotels and wooden cabins are available. Lovers of historical monuments will not be outdone: Slovakia also has sites dedicated to them. To do so, visit the town of Trnavsky. It's home to picturesque yet little-known sites such as the ruins of Dobrá Voda. To get there, head into the forest, following the red signs. It's a good idea to bring a camera to take photos of this unique place, with its stone walls and surrounding greenery. You can also take advantage of your time in Trnavsky to visit the terms of Piešťany.

After a long walk, you can relax in one of the spas or saunas. Zilinsky is also one of Slovakia's top tourist attractions. It is well known for its open-air museums, including the Skansen Museum. Here, local craftsmen display and sell their antique works. The museum comprises 30 wooden chalets that welcome tourists to the permanent exhibition. It has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. Zilinsky also offers the Demanovska Ice Cave, one of Slovakia's natural wonders. You'll enjoy a unique experience in an environment filled with white and icy peaks.

The best time to visit Slovakia

Slovakia is one of Europe's coldest countries, with temperatures ranging from -2 to 25°C. If you want to visit this country in the best climatic conditions, you'll need to plan your stay between May and September. September is the preferred month, however, as it's the time of year when there's less rain, but it's still quite warm. Note that the temperature in each region of Slovakia differs according to its location. The hottest cities are Bratislava, Hurbanovo and Lucenec.
