The Douro is a Hispanic river that rises in Spain in the Iberian Cordillera. It crosses the Meseta, a high plateau in the center of the Iberian Peninsula. It becomes a border between Spain and Portugal, winding through rugged terrain between granite walls. It then crosses into Portugal and becomes navigable, before joining the Atlantic Ocean at the city of Porto. The kingdom of Portugal was founded in the 12th century and became a major power in the 15th century, with a sizeable colonial empire. Its influence waned from the 17th century onwards. During the dictatorship that ruled the country from 1926 to 1974, many Portuguese fled the country. The Carnation Revolution of 1974 brought democracy to the country. Today, it's one of the most popular tourist destinations, thanks to its sunny oceanic climate, famous port wine and lush green landscapes. This small country, one of the oldest in Europe, is full of historical discoveries, with numerous relics of the past. Your cruise takes you to Porto, one of Europe's most beautiful cities.
Located at the mouth of the Douro River, Porto takes its name from the Romans who named it Portus (port) over 2000 years ago. A Unesco World Heritage Site, the city is distinguished by its rich architectural heritage. In Porto, you can visit numerous medieval buildings. The Ribeira district is the oldest part of town, with cobbled streets, old houses, Baroque churches and numerous cafés and restaurants. You can visit the historic center and lose yourself in the winding streets. Colorful houses with original shapes follow one another in a stunning architectural mix. The Baroque church and clerical tower offer impressive views of the city from the top of the 76-meter-high tower.
The Lello bookshop is one of the most splendid in the world, with its interior decoration of hand-carved wooden panels and stained-glass windows. The Sao Francisco church impresses visitors with its gold-leaf-covered interior walls and extravagant Baroque architecture. In the evenings, the city's various districts come alive with numerous entertainment venues and a general festive atmosphere that lasts all night long. The city is also synonymous with the famous Portuguese wine, Porto. The city's wine tourism is extensive, with tastings and tours tracing the preparation of the wine. Sailing along the Douro River in Porto, you can contemplate the city's many bridges and the river's banks.
