Magnificent islands that have inspired legends and myths
The charming archipelago of the British Virgin Islands is an ideal location for diving and sailing enthusiasts. Indeed, Peter Island, south of Tortola, is the starting point for some of the most famous scuba diving in the Caribbean, thanks in part to the discovery of the wreck of the "Rhone" mail ship, a large vessel that sank in a hurricane in the 1800s. Aside from this historical fact, these Caribbean islands have been the subject of enduring myths over the years, such as the memory of the famous Blackbeard on Dead Chest Island. And, of course, there's Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel Treasure Island, which today fuels the belief that Norman Island still harbors treasure hidden in one of its caves. In any case, what is certain is that the British Virgin Islands are made up of some 50 islands in the West Indies, covering a total area of 152 km2. Geographically speaking, they lie to the east of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Of the 16 inhabited islands (with fewer than 30,000 inhabitants), the main tourist attractions are Tortola and Virgin Gorda, because of their warm welcome and the variety of activities on offer: hiking, visiting parks and sites, swimming.

If you're a vacationer in search of the archipelago's most beautiful beaches, Virgin Gorda Island was made for you. This is where you'll find Baths National Park, one of the wonders of the Caribbean, not only because of the natural pool formed by the imposing granite rocks on the seashore, but also because of the sublime beaches it contains. These include Spring Bay, an ideal spot for swimmers and divers alike, with waters that are extremely visible from the depths. On the other side of the park, you'll also find Devil's Bay, and contrary to what its name suggests, the landscape is definitely heavenly, like a bay that brings together tall palm trees, elegant cacti, granite rocks strewn along the beaches, warm water, azure blue skies and fine white sand. What more could you want?
If you need waves to surf, the beautiful beaches of Brewers Bay and Apple Bay are at your disposal. If, on the other hand, you have a taste for adventure and discovery, like a tourist for a day (or a lifetime), head for the island of Tortola, where Road Town, the capital, is located. You could visit the dolphin park, for example, to share a few moments of complicity with these friendly marine mammals; or wander through Tortola's tropical forest, populated by man's cousins, amphibians, miniature crocodiles and brightly-colored birds such as turtle doves, amid coconut palms and mahogany trees. Want to find out more about the island's authenticity? Head for the main street, close to the seafront, where you'll see some lovely wooden or brick houses, painted in a variety of colors. At the Folkore Museum, you'll see the heritage of Indian culture, with its elegantly ornate buildings. As for the influence of English cultures, you'll see it in the practice of cricket, the archipelago's national sport. On the other hand, African traditions predominate, notably in gastronomy. You'll see seafood cooked with local spices and coconut milk, usually served with banana leaves. In short, appetizers and main courses are a perfect blend of sweet and savory, with meats often sautéed with fruit.
The ideal time to travel to the British Virgin Islands is between January and April, after which come the rains and hurricanes. And if you're drawn to these islands, it's surely because of the tropical climate, which remains more or less stable all year round, with temperatures reaching around 33°C. That said, the sea water will be lukewarm, or even warm, as heat and humidity have a positive influence on its temperature. What's more, you'll have to pass through one of the neighboring islands, such as Puerto Rico, before landing in the area, not to mention the connections provided by the airlines. Once there, remember to register your craft at the Road Town traffic office, unless you want to hire a skipper, rent a car or take a cab.
