Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and criss-crossed by the Oreto River, Palermo is Sicily's largest city. A key stopover for many sea cruises, its port can accommodate liners of over 100,000 tons. One of Palermo's main assets is its incredibly rich built heritage. The city is home to many buildings inherited from different empires, including the Byzantine, Norman and Arab empires. Most of these buildings are concentrated in the historic center, which is the second largest in Italy after Rome. To give visitors an original way to explore this vast area, a number of tricycle tours are available through its winding streets. The four buildings on Via Vittorio Emanuele are well worth a visit. For fans of swimming and lounging, a stopover in the Sicilian capital includes a visit to Mondello beach, some 11 kilometers north of the city. Dominated by Mount Gallo, this beach is part of the Capo Gallo nature reserve.

Palermo's must-see buildings include the Palazzo dei Normanni. Founded in the 9th century, this palace once housed emperors and kings. Restored in the 16th century, it houses a Byzantine chapel built during the reign of King Roger II. Spectacular to behold, the chapel's interior combines various decorative elements, including marble and mosaics by Byzantine artists depicting the stories of Saint Paul and Saint Peter. Another impressive religious building to discover during a stopover in Palermo is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, built in the 12th century. Its history is linked to that of the city, as it was here that the various Sicilian kings were crowned. Inside, the treasure room contains sacred art objects dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. In the crypt, you'll find a medieval sarcophagus. Decorated with sculptures, it belonged to the city's archbishop, who built the cathedral. After visiting the interior, climb the spiral staircase to the roof of the church and enjoy a breathtaking panorama.
