Some Northern European cruises along the Baltic begin in Warnemünde, a small German town that is administratively dependent on the city of Rostock, 10 km to the south. The ocean city is built on the shores of the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the river Warnow, from which it takes its name. Along with Rostock, the city is famous among sailing enthusiasts for hosting the Hanse Sail, one of Germany's most important maritime festivals, every August. With some of the country's widest beaches, Warnemünde is also a popular seaside destination on the Baltic coast. The small town also attracts visitors with its old fishing port. It's one of Warnemünde's liveliest spots, with fishing boats from the region arriving daily to sell their catch.

Much of Warnemünde dates back to the 19th century. Alexandrinenstraße in particular is a great place to discover this period facet of the German town. The street is lined with charming half-timbered houses. This part of Warnemünde is also home to the Heimatmuseum. This museum is partly dedicated to the history of the town. Housed in an old fisherman's cottage, the institution also immerses visitors in the daily life of the inhabitants of yesteryear, with a reconstruction of the interior of a period home. A short stroll through Warnemünde also leads to the lighthouse. Built of glazed bricks, this immaculate 36.9 m-high structure offers beautiful views over the whole town, as well as its largest beach. Dotted with beach cabins, commonly known as Strandkorbs, the main beach is a perfect place to enjoy the Baltic Sea before boarding your cruise ship. The tour of Warnemünde continues along Am Strom. This thoroughfare is home to the town's main stores and restaurants. Here you can sample some of the local specialties, such as smoked eel or the popular Currywurst. The nearby medieval town of Rostock is also well worth a visit, with its maritime museum, kulturhistorisches Museum, and a climb to the top of the Kropeliner Tower.
