Some Northern European cruises along the Baltic begin in Warnemünde, a small German town that is administratively dependent on the city of Rostock, 10 km to the south. The ocean city is built on the shores of the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the river Warnow, from which it takes its name. Much of Warnemünde dates back to the 19th century. Alexandrinenstraße in particular is a great place to discover this period facet of the German town. The street is lined with charming half-timbered houses. This part of Warnemünde is also home to the Heimatmuseum. This museum is partly dedicated to the history of the town. Housed in an old fisherman's cottage, the institution also immerses visitors in the daily life of the inhabitants of yesteryear, with a reconstruction of the interior of a period home. A short stroll through Warnemünde also leads to the lighthouse. Built of glazed bricks, this immaculate 36.9 m-high structure offers beautiful views over the whole town, as well as its largest beach.
