The Kingdom of the Netherlands is a country in Europe from the western border of Belgium, Germany, and France via the island of Saint-Martin. Constitutional monarchy, it is also bathed by the North Sea on part of its territory. It is often, wrongly, nicknamed Holland, from the name of two of its most visited provinces by tourists. Until the 16th century, the territory of the Netherlands also consisted of Belgium, northern France, and part of Picardy. Originally called United Provinces, the country gained its independence in 1579, then became the Batavian Republic between 1795 and 1806. Having become the Kingdom of Holland in 1810, the Netherlands joined the French Empire for a few years at the time. of Napoleon Bonaparte. But it was in 1815 that the country became the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, bringing together the Benelux and the colonies, until the separation with Belgium and Luxembourg. There are many cities to discover in the Netherlands, from the most modern to the richest from a historical point of view. You can start your journey in Amsterdam , the capital known for its canals and Golden Age merchant houses. This small typical village still allows you to meet old inhabitants in clogs and traditional costume. But the kingdom of the Netherlands is also an important nature to discover, especially at the Keukenhof, in the town of Lisse. It is now the largest bulb park in the world, and in the spring it allows you to appreciate more than seven million tulips, as well as narcissi or hyacinths.
