Cruise to the Netherlands: a guide to choosing the right one

A cruise in the Netherlands unfolds at water level, among canals, polders, ports, windmills, and major cities open to the rivers.

You can reach Amsterdam via the IJ, along the modern Rotterdam docks, reach Kinderdijk to see the mills in their original landscape or sail to Zeeland, between dams, villages and old trading ports.

The destination operates both as a river cruise and as a sea stop, with a beautiful combination of museums, architecture, tulips, markets, faïence, beers, cheeses and landscapes built around the water.

Tips for choosing your cruise in the Netherlands

1. Choose your region

  • Amsterdam and North Holland : The most classic region, with canals, museums, gabled houses, markets, nearby villages, and spring cruises centered on tulips.
  • Rotterdam, Kinderdijk & the Rhine–Meuse Delta : Ideal for lovers of Dutch architecture, large ports, mills, polders and river landscapes.
  • Zeeland & the southwest : A more maritime approach, between dams, ancient ports, villages, beaches, Veere, Middelburg and the history of the fight against the sea.
  • Rhine, Meuse & Belgium routes : Perfect for connecting Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Cologne or Basel, with a very fluid river cruise logic.

2. Choose your cruise style

Long days and a lively atmosphere. Cities are vibrant, terraces are full, and river cruises benefit from long evenings on deck.

Expert advice

Good time to combine Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Zeeland and the Rhine, but the most well-known places can be more crowded.

Weather & swimming

Quieter, mild, and cultural. Museums, cities, and ports are less busy, and the light on the canals is often beautiful.

Expert advice

Excellent compromise for travelers who prefer cities, museums, architecture and river navigation without the spring rush.

November–December (winter atmosphere)

Weather & swimming

Cooler, but warm and inviting in the cities. Year-end cruises may focus on markets, lights, museums, and cafes.

Expert advice

Choose this period for a more urban, cultural cruise. The weather can be wet and windy, but the cities remain highly rewarding.

Seeing Amsterdam from the canals

Amsterdam truly comes alive when viewed from the water. Travelers love its bridges, gabled houses, leaning façades, and the unique way the city seems organized around its canals.

Learn more about your Netherlands cruise

A region rich in monuments and traditions

There are many cities to discover in the Netherlands, from the most modern to the richest from a historical point of view. You can start your journey in Amsterdam , the capital known for its canals and Golden Age merchant houses. To discover in particular, the famous Red Light District and its ladies in the window and its narrow streets, or even interesting art museums such as the Van Gogh Museum, which offers one of the painter's most important collections , or the Rijksmuseum , the equivalent of the Parisian Louvre. Don't miss the New Church in Gothic style, or the Anne Frank House which retraces the tragedy of this little Jewish girl during the Second World War .

.

Europe's largest commercial port, Rotterdam is also not lacking in interest. More contemporary than its counterpart, the city seduces with its modernity and its buildings. Also new, the city of The Hague is an opportunity to discover recent architecture mixed with Art Nouveau. For more authenticity, head to Delft. Birthplace of the famous painter Vermeer, it reveals a more traditional style as well as monuments rich in history. The town is also known for its earthenware to discover in shops or museums. Oldest city in the country, Maastricht not only gave its name to a European treaty. The city on the border with Belgium is also known for its cobbled streets and its antiques fair, the largest in the world. And if you want to get into the very heart of Dutch culture, head to Marten. This small typical village still allows you to meet old inhabitants in clogs and traditional costume. But the kingdom of the Netherlands is also an important nature to discover, especially at the Keukenhof, in the town of Lisse. It is now the largest bulb park in the world, and in the spring it allows you to appreciate more than seven million tulips, as well as narcissi or hyacinths. A flower parade is organized in this expanse of more than 32 hectares in mid-April. A true symbol of the Netherlands, the Kinderdijk is represented on almost all postcards. You will discover an alignment of nineteen mills in two rows. These monuments, which still stand proudly, were built in the 18th century, right in a marshy area, revealing landscapes of great beauty.

A temperate climate with maritime accents

You will find a temperate climate in the Netherlands, nourished by the influences of the North Sea. This marine contribution thus causes mild summers, but quite rainy, as well as winters that are cooler than cold. It is not uncommon for the country to experience quite strong winds in winter. If the grayness is quite present in the off-seasons, with in particular a lot of rain, the month of May remains pleasant to discover most of the Netherlands. At this time of year, the territory is less watered, and you can admire the many plants that bloom in nature and in the parks of Dutch cities.
