Mozambique, between wilderness and big cities

Mozambique stands out for its privileged geographical location. Situated in the south-east of the African continent, the country stretches along 2,500 kilometers of coastline and opens onto the Indian Ocean. Off this immense coastline, Mozambique also boasts a number of islands that, like the rest of the country, are still relatively unknown. And yet, with its long, paradise-like beaches, such as those of Bazaruto, or the tropical Quirimbas islands, which are veritable sanctuaries for nature, Mozambique has everything to make travelers dream. The country also surprises with its diversity. Here, tradition and modernity, wilderness and urban sprawl combine in stark contrast. Between the urban face of Maputo and the wide-open spaces of the north, where nature reigns supreme, the country fascinates. Discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1498, Mozambique became a Portuguese colony until 1975, when the country officially gained independence. This was followed by a long civil war lasting 17 years. These historical events explain why Mozambique remains relatively unknown to travellers. For a long time, the country was closed to the rest of the world. Today, the country reveals itself to you through its dream beaches, national parks, Lake Niassa and its surroundings, inviting you to adventure.

Must-sees in Mozambique

Mozambique's islands and beaches are among the country's must-sees, especially as it boasts some of the most beautiful coastlines in Africa. Surrounded by a sea in shades of blue, the beaches of Tofo in the south-west promise pure moments of relaxation under the sun of the Indian Ocean. A visit to this town in the province of Inhambane will also give you the chance to get up close and personal with whale sharks. The Bazaruto Archipelago and the deserted Quirimbas Islands also offer you the chance to enjoy the sea in an unspoilt environment. Diving is an experience not to be missed.

Some islands stand out for their vestiges of the past. Visit Mozambique Island's colonial houses and fortress, which have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. A trip to Mozambique must include a visit to the bustling capital Maputo. Its bustling nightlife, chic boutiques and posh restaurants make it a vibrant city that stands in stark contrast to the traditional villages of the Niassa province, located in the north of the country and nestled in the Great Rift Valley. Whereas in Maputo, modern buildings are springing up like mushrooms, in these villages, people still live in small thatched huts, use age-old drumsticks and dance to the rhythm of ancestral songs. Nature lovers will be delighted by the unspoilt nature of this country, which deserves to be better known. Along the trails of Gorongosa National Park, in the Chimanimani mountains or around Lake Niassa, you can admire the wildlife as you hike. The tea plantations of Gurué province reveal the country's bucolic charm.

Mozambique: when to go?

Mozambique enjoys a tropical climate, with two main seasons throughout the year. The period between April and October is the dry season. At this time of year, the skies are always clear. The country experiences a short cool spell around July. In Mozambique, this means temperatures between 16 and 20°C. The rest of the year, from November to March, the country is in the humid, hot season. During this period, temperatures vary between 25 and 31°C.

On the whole, you can visit the country all year round, but to avoid torrential rains and heat peaks, you'd better travel to Mozambique during the dry season. That way, you'll enjoy the sunny skies and mild climate. Note that temperatures tend to rise the further north you go, closer to the equator. Between April and October, the weather conditions are particularly favorable for all kinds of activities, including gourmet evenings. On Mozambique Island, take advantage of the waterfront terrace of Rickshaws Pousada e Cafe to enjoy the sunset while savoring the seafood dishes that are so characteristic of this ocean-facing country.
