Uruguay: a "stopover country

Uruguay is the smallest country in South America, covering just 176,215 km2. Situated between Brazil to the north and Argentina to the east, it is an extension of the Argentine pampas. It is crossed by the Uruguay and Plata rivers, and is overlooked by Mount Catedral, which rises to a height of 514 m. Made up of hills and plains for farming and stockbreeding, the gauchos, emblems of the country, are there to watch over the herds. The country is best known for its ranches or estancias, home to equestrian tourism enthusiasts, and its capital, Montevideo, with its quaint, vintage 50s atmosphere. However, you can also see modern buildings, museums such as the Museo del Gaucho, a zoo and a planetarium. Apart from this, the country is also famous for Colinia del Sacramento, its most beautiful colonial town, and Punta del Este, the most popular seaside resort on its 250 km coastline.

Learn more about your Uruguay cruise

Visit Uruguay and its most beautiful sites

Uruguay's main tourist attraction is undoubtedly its beaches. If you're looking to relax, head to the seaside resorts of Punta del Este, Atlantida or Piriapolis to sunbathe and take a dip, but above all to party. You'll see villas as far as the eye can see, gambling casinos and golf courses. You'll experience a truly Western atmosphere.

However, if you're looking for a change of scenery, you can explore the villages. The most beautiful is undoubtedly in the department of La Rocha, where Aguas Dulces is located. You can also visit Punta del Diablo to discover this secret jewel of Uruguay. In town, the capital Montevideo is "the place to be". Stretching along the banks of the Rio de la Plata, you'll have the chance to discover it by cruising along the water. You'll discover a picturesque architecture mainly made up of structures with Spanish, Art Deco and Italian influences. What's more, you can educate yourself by visiting sites of interest such as the Museo Historico Nacional, the Museo Gurvich or the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda. And don't forget to take out your camera to capture the city's landmark: the Palacio Salvo, erected in the middle of Plaza Independencia. Don't forget to immerse yourself in the local culture at the Feria de Tristant Narvaja market.

Apart from its capital, Colonia del Sacramento is also well worth a visit. The country's oldest city, its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The downtown area alone is an open-air museum, with views of the lighthouse, Casa de Narcelo, Iglesia Matriz and the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco. Last but not least, you can't pass through Uruguay without seeing its cowboys: gauchos wearing black felt hats and always equipped with their knives. If you're feeling peckish, don't hesitate to try some of Uruguay's cuisine. Famous dishes include Buesca or spicy oxtail soup with peas and beans; El Chivito; asados or barbecue made in Uruguay; and tarta pascualina. If you have a sweet tooth, try dulce de leche.

The ideal time to visit

Uruguay has a temperate climate all year round. In winter, the weather is relatively mild, between 10 and 16°C, and in summer, temperatures can rise to 21-28°C. So you can go there from January to December without any problems. For your information, winter begins in June and ends in September, while summer lasts from December to March. Some precipitation is to be expected, so a light raincoat is recommended. However, to make the most of its beaches, you'll need to plan your stay for summer. Winter, on the other hand, will allow you to avoid the crowds, especially when visiting the historic monuments. To make the most of your vacation, the country has a number of restaurants, the most famous of which are Tandory and Bodega Bouza.
